Founded in 1920, the League of Women Voters (LWV) is a nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit dedicated to empowering everyone to fully participate in our democracy.  With active Leagues in all 50 states and more than 750 Leagues across the country, LWV engages in advocacy, education, litigation, and organizing to protect every American’s freedom to vote.

It May Be Cold Outside, but
Voter Registration Events and Collaborations
Have Been Heating Up

January has been a busy month for the League of Women Voters of Richardson (LWVR) voter registration activities. Thanks to the dedication of many in LWVR there have already been numerous voter registration efforts this year. Our focus has been to outreach to potential voters who, for a variety of reasons, may not have been engaged recently or at other times in the past. LWVR has reached out to senior living communities, schools, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) officers, city event planners and other entities in the community to begin ramping up registration events for this important election year.

In January, we instituted office hours on Tuesday afternoons, giving us visibility and the opportunity to both register and educate our building neighbors about voting. Additional voter registration events were held at the Martin Luther King Parade in Garland, Appletree Court Assisted Living, and Alamo Drafthouse. LWVR thanks volunteers Cathy Murphree, Cathy Lawrence, Dan Callahan, Dave Santucci, Ellen Steger, Janet Centola, Joey Kaner and Vicki Barrett for their efforts to register voters at these events. They have worked at outreach tables, provided information, spoken to potential voters, and encouraged others to join in the fun.

LWVR also re-established a display at the Richardson Independent School District (RISD) Council of PTAs' Used Book Fair, which will be available in January for book drop off times and in February during the actual Book Fair. Cathy Murphree has collaborated with other organizations to educate and register students and staff in classrooms and on the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) campus this month, as well at the University of North Texas at Dallas (UNTD). Cathy maintains contacts with other VDR’s and coordinates for United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Naturalization events throughout the year.

In February, the energy continues with events already scheduled at the Lunar New Year Celebration in Chinatown on February 11th, and again at Alamo Drafthouse on February 23rd. The RISD Used Book Fair is February 15th – 19th. Several other folks have already committed to volunteering at those events and to refresh our displays. We encourage others to help when possible.  Of course, we need Volunteer Deputy Registrars (VDRs) but we also can use help from those who are not VDRs as well. If you are interested in finding out how you can become a VDR or how you can help, contact Janet Centola aVoterReg@LWVRichardson.org.

March 5 Election

In-person early voting for the Republican and Democratic Party Primary Elections will begin on February 20th and end on March 1st.  You must be registered at your current address by February 5th to vote in the Primaries. You may update your Texas address or change your name online.

For complete information about this important election, including voting times and locations, sample ballots, and information about LWV-sponsored candidate forums and Voters Guides, visit our website.

To view Voters Guide responses from candidates, and to compare candidates side-by-side, you can use the LWV online resource, www.vote411.org.  About a week before the first day of early voting, candidates' responses to LWV Voters Guide questions will be available on this website. Simply enter your address, choose the party whose candidates you wish to view, and click on "Go to my races." You will then see ONLY the races and candidates who will appear on YOUR ballot. All eligible candidates were invited to respond to Voters Guide questions.  If a candidate's responses do not appear, that candidate did not provide us with responses.

Printed copies of the Dallas County Voters Guide will be available at locations around town prior to the beginning of early voting.  We will link to printable Voters Guides for Collin County races on our website.

Call for Voters Guide Questions

For the May 4 RISD Board of Trustees election, it is not too late to submit potential Voters Guide topics or questions to The League of Women Voters of Richardson.  Please submit a topic or question for consideration to VoterService@LWVRichardson.org by February 16.  All topics and questions will be considered, but there is no guarantee that a particular question will be used.  We reserve the right to combine questions and/or rewrite them for clarity.

CHIP and Children's Medicaid
Application Help Session
on February 17

The League of Women Voters of Richardson and other groups involved in advocacy for children will sponsor an application help session and help with renewal of CHIP and Children’s Medicaid on Feb. 17, 2024, at St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church, 1220 W. Belt Line Road, Richardson, TX 75080 (adjacent to Richardson High School) from 9 am until noon. We would appreciate it if you would make the event known to families who might be interested.

A family of four with an income of about $55,500 per year may be eligible for insurance for their children. These programs are well established and are excellent resources in helping children become and remain healthy. All information gathered is kept private and secure, as required by law.

Below is a copy of the flyer. I would be happy to bring paper copies of these to you if you would like to distribute any. Just let me know. We invite specialists on these programs to attend who speak Spanish and can answer any questions.

Thank you for your support and encouragement for families to obtain health insurance for their children.
