FROM THE PRESIDENT
By Ellen Steger, President                                                        president@lwvrichardson.org

The League of Women Voters of Richardson's VOTER has a new look!  Same great, unbiased, factual information.  Delivered to you in the email, not in an attached file.

Our first-ever Discussion Group was a big success.  We hope you will join us in October when we will discuss  "Doughnut Economics".

Did you know there is an election on November 2?  Local elections don't get much 'hype', but they are just as important as Presidential Elections.  Visit LWV-R's website  for information regarding the election, including pro-con information about 8 amendments to the Texas Constitution and 5 City of Richardson bond proposals.

Traditionally, turnout is very low for local elections.  So, I can only say one thing:
VOTE!

MEMBERSHIP MINUTE
By Nita Thomason, Membership VP                                 membership@lwvrichardson.org

One of the goals of Membership is to help our members connect with one another. Especially during these times with COVID concerns, meeting together presents challenges. Our Board has discussed ways to gather and minimize risks.

Thank you to those who joined us in September for our first "Social" at the Dog Haus. It was good to see others. Since we were able to eat outside on the patio, it seemed relatively safe and that is important, particularly for people with compromised health situations.
So, for October, we have another plan - different time, different place, but still with precautions.

Please consider joining with other LWV-Richardson members:
Monday, October 18
BYO Brown Bag luncheon
Heights Park

(Park in the parking lot off Floyd Road -or-
in the Aquatics Center parking lot and cross the bridge)

11:30am - 12:30pm
(weather permitting)
Bring a friend!
We chose October 18 because it is the first day of early voting. So, assuming you have read and studied our new Voters Guide and figured out how you want to vote, we will eat and then go together down the road a few blocks to City Hall and cast our ballots. Mark your calendars now.

Hope to see you then!

VOTER SERVICE

By Pamela Wren, Voter Registration Director                          voterreg@lwvrichardson.org
Your League of Women Voters held a Voter Registration Drive on Saturday, September 25th, at the Richardson Farmers Market in the Dal Rich Towne Square.  Five people were registered to vote, Applications for Ballot by Mail were handed out, and lots of questions were answered.

PUBLIC EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY
By Marcia Grau, Education and Advocacy VP                            program@lwvrichardson.org

The first meeting of the Discussion Group was held September 21, 2021, via Zoom. The book was The Soul of America, The Battle for Our Better Angels by Jon Meacham. There were 9 attendees and an interesting discussion ensued, led by LWV-R Membership Vice President Nita Thomason.

We decided to continue meeting on the third Tuesday of October and November and then skip December.
The topic for the October meeting will be:
Doughnut Economics.

To prepare for the October 19th Discussion Group, please read

The topic for the November 16th meeting will be:  When Dallas Was the Most Racist City in America.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS

New look for Facebook!

Beginning on November 3, 2021, the League of Women Voters of Richardson will be discontinuing use of this public group Facebook page.  Instead, we will post on our “business” Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/LWVRichardsonTX/

Changing from a group page to a business page will allow us to embed our latest Facebook post on our website.  It will also enhance our visibility on the LWV-TX website, and will make it easier for our supporters to follow us and like our posts.

Be sure to bookmark our new business page, and share it with your friends.

COMMUNITY FORUM FROM LWV-DAVIS (California)
LWV-Davis (California) is hosting a Health Reform & Social Justice community forum on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, 8pm - 10pm Central Time.
