Changes to Voting in Texas for 2022

Following the 2020 Census and the redistricting process, many voting district boundaries have changed at the federal, state, county, and local levels. Your county Elections Department will be mailing out new voter registration cards in January, which will show which districts you will be voting in beginning in 2022. As we get more information, we will update this page.

These new districts are in effect for the March 1, 2022 Primary Election. If your district number has changed, the person representing you will have changed as well.

Texas Tribune Map Viewer Tool

The Texas Tribune website has published a very useful tool Texas voters can use to view changes to their voting districts at the federal and state level.

By entering you address in the Texas Tribune tool linked to above, you can view maps of both your old and new districts for:

• U.S. House of Representatives
• Texas House of Representatives
• Texas Senate, and
• State Board of Education

Demographic changes for each district are listed as well.

The League of Women Voters of Texas has put together a one-page document on changes to election laws that are going into effect in 2022. 

Note that this is provided as general information only, not as legal advice.

• On the Texas Secretary of State’s website, fill out the “Informal Online Application” to register to vote.  If you have never registered to vote in Texas, you will need to register before voting. If you fill out and print an online voter registration application, you will then mail it to your county Elections Department:

• If you have moved within Texas or changed your name since you last voted, you can now make changes to your voter registration online. Click here to view a video with tips on using the online form to make changes.
• Texans who apply for a Texas Driver License may apply to register to vote at the same time. When Texans update their driver license online, they may update their voter registration at the same time.
• You can check to see if you are already registered to vote on the Texas Secretary of State’s website. Your status should say “Active.” Click here to view a video with tips.

New voter registration cards were mailed to registered voters before the March 1, 2022, Primary Election.

You do not need to bring the card with you to vote. You DO need photo ID to vote, or you may sign a declaration and provide alternate approved ID. See our Texas Voter ID Requirements page.

Who is eligible to vote by mail in Texas?

• 65 years or older
• Sick or disabled
• Out of the county during early voting and Election Day 
• In jail or Involuntary Civil Confinement but otherwise eligible to vote
• NEW! Expecting to give birth within three weeks before or after Election Day
