Helping Voters Be Informed

April and May are incredibly busy months for Voter Service. In helping voters cast better-informed votes, the League has compiled and distributed Voters Guides for the Primary Election, the City of Richardson Charter and Bond Elections, and the RISD Board of Trustees Elections. Since we were not able to distribute our Guides in City of Richardson facilities, such as the library and recreation centers, we found a few other locations for distributing the guides such as Network of Community Ministries and Tongue in Cheek Ice Cream Shop, as well as four City of Dallas libraries and recreation centers in the RISD area. A special thank you to Liz Harling for her hard work on the COR and RISD Guides.

Our RISD Single-Member District 3 and At-Large Place 6 Forums were very informative and the videos are now available. Thank you to Ruth Ellen Heaton for organizing and taking the lead on the two forums. Hundreds of voters have already viewed the forum videos so this effort on the part of many LWVRichardson members truly helps our local community have a better understanding of people running for our Board of Trustees. If you haven’t already voted early, be sure you go to the polls on Election Day, May 2.

Janet Centola and Cathy Murphree report that we have had a great winter/spring focusing on young voter registration at high schools, colleges, universities, technical schools, and community events tailored to young people. LWVR-led teams have held over 30 events, visited at least 9 campuses, and registered over 200 new voters, exceeding the conditions of the Youth Voter Registration Grant our League received. Thank you to all our Volunteer Deputy Registrars (VDRs) who have participated in this important initiative. We invite others to join us and are happy to visit with anyone who might be interested!

May 26 Primary Runoff Elections
Yes!  There's another election in May!

In Texas, the Republican and Democratic Parties hold Primary Elections to determine their candidates for the November elections. Primary Elections were held March 3, 2026.
  • On March 3: those candidates who received more than half of the ballots cast in their race won that election and will represent their political party in the November 3, 2026, Election.
  • On March 3: for those races where there was no winner (i.e., no candidate received over 50% of the vote), there will be a runoff election between the two candidates receiving the most votes cast for that race in the March 3, 2026, Primary Elections. The candidate who wins the Primary Runoff Election on May 26th will represent their political party in the November 3, 2026, Elections.
The Primary Runoff Elections will be May 26 and early voting will be May 18 - 22. See our website for factual, nonpartisan information about what is on your ballot for the runoff election.
  • You do not have to register with the political party in order to vote in their Primary Runoff Election.
  • If you voted in a March 3rd political party primary, you will need to vote in the same party for the Primary Runoff Election.  You do not have to vote for the same candidates in the Primary Runoff Elections as you did in the Primary Elections.
  • If you did not vote in either political party’s Primary Election, you may vote in either the Republican or Democratic Party Primary Runoff Elections.

LWVR Is Reviewing All Its Local Positions

LWVR's Local Program Planning meeting was held on February 11.  It was determined that, although there is no need to change our positions, we should review their language and consider revisions that would broaden their application. Our positions may be found here

We will meet via Zoom on the 4th Thursday of the month at 7pm, via Zoom.

The next meeting will be Thursday, May 28, at 7:00 pm.  Here is the Zoom link
At that meeting, we will review
  • Position I: City Charter and
  • Position II: Election Laws and Procedures.
We hope to hear your thoughts at that meeting.  Although only LWVR members can vote to make changes to a position, we invite the larger community to attend a meeting to review our positions.  We welcome your insight in proposing updated language for our positions.  We will publish in the VOTER which position will be up for discussion the following month. Your specialized expertise and knowledge will be invaluable in this process and we hope to hear your input at one or more meetings!

April 23rd Meeting

LWVR held the first meeting to review and consider revising our positions on April 23. Position VII was the focus and the suggested verbiage is below.

Position VII: Richardson ISD and Schools in Plano ISD That Serve Richardson Students.
We support:

A. promoting adequate funding for public schools to ensure that Richardson students receive a high-quality education
B. effective school guidance and counseling programs.
C. school health services and education with sufficient staff, nurses and facilities.
D. providing a variety of opportunities and choice for parents and children in the public school system.
E. the participation of school districts in parental education programs.

Once all our local positions have been reviewed, the LWVR membership will have a chance to review all of the local positions. The proposed revisions to LWVR's Local Positions will be presented at the 2027 Local Program Meeting.  At that meeting, the membership can vote to Keep, Drop, or Restudy each of the Local Positions.  The recommendations from that meeting will be presented and voted on at the 2027 Annual Meeting.  That's when the revised Local Positions could be adopted by the membership.

Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

CHIP and Children’s Medicaid have been well received by Texas families and these programs help to assure that our children have adequate preventative care in addition to coverage for more complex medical care. It is much more cost effective to provide immunizations, check-ups, and early intervention in childhood illnesses than to wait for a problem to develop into an emergency.

LWVRichardson is a long-time supporter of these programs.
On April 18, 2026, Marcie Salome and Martha Dorris volunteered to help families apply for insurance. They were assisted by Emma Engler from Ardyn Hope. One family successfully completed the application.

Our next opportunity to assist will be late this summer:.  Watch for details closer to the date!

For more information, please contact Martha Dorris.
