Will you help us next year?

LWVRichardson members Marcia Grau, Nita Thomason, and Brenda Boston comprise the LWVR Nominating Committee (NomCom).  It is their job to present a slate of officers and directors for the 2023-2024 year.  The slate will be voted on by LWVR members at the Annual Meeting on May 10, 2023.

Are you interested in helping guide LWVR through the 2023-2024 year?  There are lots of positions available.  One might be of interest to you!  Check out the responsibilities for each position here.

Let the NomCom know which positions you are interested in.  Fill out the Interest in Serving Form, save it, and email it to League@lwvrichardson.org.

Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

For at least 15 years, LWVRichardson, along with others interested in children’s health, has supported efforts that encourage families to obtain health insurance for their children and the economic security that coverage provides.

Help is needed at CHIP/Children's Medicaid application help sessions from 9 am to noon at St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church (1220 W Belt Line Road in Richardson 75080) on:
  • Feb. 18, 2023
  • March 11, 2023
  • April 15, 2023
  • May 13, 2023
Some families have great difficulty understanding what information is requested and need help to complete the form. Your responsibilities might include:
  • welcoming our families,
  • checking for eligibility,
  • checking that they have the correct documentation,
  • helping with the form,
  • keeping the children  entertained while the parents complete the  form,
  • discussing what to expect next, and/or
  • handing out other information if the family members are not eligible.
Someone will be on hand to give you a short training session, if you'd like.

Background
Texas leads the nation in uninsured children (11% versus 5% for USA) and Dallas County is second only to Harris County in uninsured children. Of about 38,000 children in Dallas County, half are estimated to be eligible for benefits. Federal cuts to outreach and enrollment assistance have deterred parents from enrolling their children.

Update on the Central Trail Extension

LWVRichardson member Cathy Lawrence is the liaison between LWVR and the City of Richardson regarding the completion of the Central Trail Extension.  The League has been advocating the completion of this project for years.

The Central Trail Extension will connect Richardson's Central Trail to the City of Dallas's White Rock Trail.  The connection is through unincorporated land in Dallas County.

Cathy has good news to report!

#1:   In the Fall 2022, Dallas County in partnership with City of Richardson applied for a grant to fund the Central Trail along Restland Cemetery and was awarded funds by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Regional Transportation Council (RTC) at their December 8, 2022, meeting (www.nctcog.org/rtc). This project funding does not cover the full alignment of the Central Trail extension to DART Forest Station but would be the initial phase covering the portion within Richardson.

#2:  The Active Transportation Plan is to be presented to Richardson City Council at its Council Meeting on Monday, February 6, 2023. Due to the fire that closed City Hall, the Richardson City Council is now meeting at 7pm in the Multi-Purpose Meeting Room at the
Richardson Police Department
200 N Greenville Avenue
northeast corner of Greenville and Main Street (Beltline)
