  • February 17, 2023, 5:00pm:  Last day to file for a place on the May 6, 2023 ballot

City of Richardson (COR)

Click here to see a map of the 4 districts in the City of Richardson.

Click here to find the requirements to run for City of Richardson City Council.  Since 7,542 people voted in the last COR Mayoral election, it will take 38 signatures of qualified voters for a candidate to petition to be included on the May 6, 2023, ballot.

Candidates may pick up packets in person in the City Secretary’s Office beginning January 3, 2023.  Since the Civic Center is closed indefinitely due to a fire, the City Secretary’s Office is temporarily located at the Richardson IQHQ, 1302 E. Collins Boulevard.  Also beginning January 3, 2023, candidates may request an electronic packet be emailed to them by sending a request to the City Secretary at aimee.nemer@cor.gov.

According to the COR website,  “The Richardson City Council consists of the Mayor, two at-large seats and four place, or district, seats. Though members representing Place 1 thru 4 must reside in those areas, all members of the City Council are elected at-large by voters. Once elected, council members choose the Mayor Pro Tem from among the elected members. All City Council seats carry two-year terms, and are up for election during May of every odd year. Term limits for membership on the City Council are limited to 6 terms, or 12 consecutive years.”

All places on Richardson’s City Council (including the Mayor) are At-large Places, meaning that all registered voters living in the City of Richardson (Dallas County and Collin County) may vote in the elections. The races that will be on the COR ballot are:

  • At-large Place 7 (Mayor):  Paul Voelker currently holds the position.  There is no residency requirement to run in Place 7 (Mayor).

Richardson ISD (RISD)

Click here to see the map of the 5 single-member districts in RISD.

According to the RISD website, “Richardson Independent School District voters elect board members to serve three-year staggered terms, helping to ensure that the board always includes experienced members. Five trustees represent specific geographic areas (known as Single-Member Districts), while two At-Large trustees represent the entire district. Service on the board is voluntary and members must complete an extensive orientation as well as continued training throughout their terms. RISD trustees consistently exceed the minimum number of state-mandated training hours.

“The Board of Trustees has the executive power and duty to govern and oversee the management of RISD. Acting as a collective body, the Board sets the direction for the school district. Some of the Board’s general responsibilities include:

  • Setting district policies and supporting administrators and teachers in the execution of those policies.
  • Employing and evaluating the superintendent.
  • Adopting the annual budget.
  • Levying/collecting taxes and issuing bonds.
  • Performing specific duties imposed by the state.”

The races that will be on the RISD ballot are:

  • Single-member District 3:  Debbie Renteria (Vice President) currently holds the position.  You must live in District 3 in order to run in District 3.  Only registered voters living in District 3 may vote in this election.
  • At-Large Place 6:  Eric Eager currently holds the position.  There is no residency requirement to run in Place 6.  All registered voters living in RISD may vote in this election.

Plano ISD (PISD)

Click here for information on how to file to run for Plano ISD Board of Trustees.  Candidate packets may be picked up by appointment from the PISD Communications Office at 2700 W. 15th Street in Plano 75075, beginning January 4, 2023.

According to the PISD website, “The Plano ISD Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected to serve, without compensation, for overlapping terms of four years each. Operating within the legal parameters of the state and federal constitutions, statutes, courts and administrative agencies, the board is charged with the responsibility of providing the finest educational program possible for the students in the district. School trustees make all final decisions regarding school district priorities, policies, personnel, textbooks, expenditures and growth management. Trustees adopt a budget which is necessary to maintain and operate the schools, levy taxes to support the budget and submit bond issues to the citizens of the district to finance construction projects. The board employs and evaluates the superintendent of schools, and selects and supervises the internal auditor.”

All places on Plano ISD’s Board of Trustees are At-large Places, meaning that all registered voters living in the Plano ISD may vote in the elections. The races that will be on the PISD ballot are:

  • At-Large Place 4:  Dr. Heather Wang currently holds the position.
  • At-Large Place 5:  David Stolle (President) currently holds the position.
  • At-Large Place 7:  Cody Weaver currently holds the position.

How to Become a VDR in 4 Counties

Help LWVRichardson:  Become a VDR

Want to become a Volunteer Deputy Registrar (VDR) and help LWVRichardson register voters?

VDR certification expires on December 31 of every even-numbered year.  So, if you have been a VDR in a county in Texas, your certification expired on December 31.  To register voters in 2023 in a given county, you must certify with that county's elections office.

Want to help LWVRichardson register voters?  Get certified!!  We need your help!
  • LWVRichardson usually gets citizens from Dallas County and Collin County at its registration events.  So, it's good to be certified in both Dallas and Collin Counties in order to help at LWVRichardson voter registration events.
  • Being certified also in Tarrant and Denton Counties is beneficial if you want to help LWVRichardson register new citizens at a naturalization ceremony.  (On December 13, there were almost 3,000 new citizens sworn in.  LWVRichardson registered 170 new citizens.  Non-LWVR VDRs were there as well.  About 1,000 new citizens were registered in total.)
March To The Polls (MTTP) has a training session on January 19, 6pm-7:30pm, at Temple Emanu-El (8500 Hillcrest Road in Dallas).  The nice thing about this training is that you can attend one training class and MTTP will have VDR materials mailed to you from each of the 4 counties (Collin, Dallas, Denton, Tarrant) in which you are interested in being certified.  You choose which of the 4 counties you want to become a VDR in.  MTTP may ask for a donation to offset mailing costs.  The donation is optional.

Click here to register for MTTP's VDR training class.

After you've been certified:
  • let Pam know at VoterReg@lwvrichardson.org so she can contact you to volunteer at one of LWVRichardson's voter registration drives in 2023.  LWVR will sponsor voter registration drives for the May 2023 City of Richardson City Council and Richardson ISD Board of Trustees contested races.
  • let Cathy know at NewCitizen@lwvrichardson.org so she can contact you to volunteer at one of the North Texas Naturalization Cermonies.  The first naturalization ceremony of 2023 will be Thursday, January 26.
Thanks.
