New Voter ID Requirements

Are new voter identification requirements in effect in Texas?

Status of Voter ID

In 2011, the Texas Legislature passed a new voter identification law, which required federal approval to take effect. On March 12, the Department of Justice (DOJ) notified Texas that it would not approve the requirement because data Texas provided demonstrates disproportionately negative impact on registered minority voters. Texas has sued for approval by the DC district court and that case is proceeding.

The photo ID requirement will not be in effect for May 12 local elections and May 29 state primary elections. Texas voters need only show their voter registration card and/or one of the forms of identification listed here.

Depending on the outcome of pending litigation, photo identification may be required for the November General Election. The League of Women Voters of Texas has further information concerning the status of voter identification on its website.
