Making Democracy Work

No Cell Phones in Polling Places

Can I use my cell phone while voting?

Under Texas law, no cell phones or other wireless communications devices may be used by persons who are within 100 feet of voting stations. Prohibited devices include:
  • Cell phones
  • Cameras
  • Tablet computers
  • Laptop computers
  • Sound recorders
  • Any other device that may communicate wirelessly, or be used to record sound or images.

Under some circumstances, persons with disabilities may be permitted to use electronic devices to assist them.

For more information, see the website of the Texas Secretary of State

Since you can't use your cell phone to research candidates and issues while voting, be sure to do your research before you go to vote.

  • Go to VOTE411 to find nonpartisan League-produced Voters Guide content, then either print or write down the information you need to vote; OR

  • Pick up a printed LWV Voters Guide at your nearest library or other locations around town.

Voters may bring handwritten or printed materials (including LWV printed Voters Guides) with them when they vote to assist them in casting their ballot.
